THE PLACE WHERE SUN RISES TWICE

Zaostrog

Zaostrog is located in southern Dalmatia, widely known, not just in Croatia, for its white sand and pebble beaches and crystal clear Adriatic sea.

The beaches stretch the entire length of the village; you can enjoy yourself on the beach equipped with deckchairs, showers and changing areas, or in romantic, hidden coves reached by walking through the pine woods.

However, your vacation and stay in camp can be enriched by other activities along with enjoying the sun and the Adriatic sea. On the slopes of the mountain massif-Rilic, Biokovo rising above Zaostrog, there are possibilities for various sports and adventure activities (hiking, nordic-walking, cycling). Culture lovers can enjoy the visit to the famous Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary and the old churches in the nearby old village. Zaostrog also offers a range of entertainment and catering facilities, and for those who want peaceful holidays we recommend walking along the sea and enjoying a romantic dinner under the starry sky.

The village is situated in a natural basin, approximately 35 km from the town of Makarska, and has about 300 inhabitants. Along with long stretches of beaches and pine woods, mountain Viter and hill Plana dominate the landscape. Because of its mild climate and a wide range of activities offered in Zaostrog region, this part of the Makarska Riviera is a perfect place for summer vacation, but also for holiday during spring and fall when you can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing stay. The geographical location of the village makes it an ideal hub for excursions to many natural and cultural heritage sites in Dalmatia located nearby.

Entertainment and night life

Each summer several traditional festivals and celebrations are held in Zaostrog. Especially important for the residents are the feasts of Our Lady of the Angels and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which are characterized by processions and cultural events.

Things get particularly merry during Fishermen’s festivities with additional range of dishes, drinks and live music, organized events and games.

Nearby villages and towns also offer a rich night life. Common summer night life destinations for young people are Drvenik, Brist and Gradac.

Even more opportunities for entertainment can be found in Makarska where you can enjoy bars, disco clubs, cinema, theater, Makarska summer evenings and the Fishermen’s nights. Dates of events in and around Zaostrog are listed on the calendar of events.

Activities on the sea

During the summer months in Zaostrog, besides sunbathing and swimming, you can enjoy in fishing, jet-ski rides, parasailing (parachute flight by pulling boat), windsurfing, pedal boats or rides on the banana. Along with the adrenaline rush you’ll certainly get from some of these activities, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the panorama of Zaostrog which, in the opinion of many, is even more beautiful from the sea.

Diving is also a popular activity in this part of Dalmatia. The waters of Makarska Riviera are abundant with flora and fauna, rich in wrecks and ancient sites and are attractive for lovers of the underwater.

Sport and recreation on land

Not far from the camp Viter is a sports center that offers sporting facilities for all ages – trampoline and games for kids, football and basketball courts. Zaostrog has a tennis court (artificial grass surface), and several places where you can play table tennis and billiards.

Walking, Nordic-walking and hiking are among the favorite activities in Zaostrog. If you decide to go walking or hiking on the southern slopes of the Rilic make sure to wear sneakers or other sturdy footwear, put on a hat and bring a bottle of water. There are several marked trails, but one of the prettiest walks is up the Plana hill (260 m). You can get to the top following the gravel path. On your way up you will surely be mesmerized by the scent of various aromatic herbs and a magnificent view of the islands of Hvar, Brac and the Peljesac peninsula. More experienced hikers can explore Sapasnik (920 m), and Viter (770 m). Viter, which descends steeply to the village, is one of the symbols of Zaostrog.

We strongly recommend walk or bike ride up to Zaostrog Upper Village, only a few kilometers away from the sea side. You can reach the village using the asphalt roads, but if you plan to visit nearby villages of Podaca or Drvenik, using the mountain roads, you would need to take well maintained marvel roads. Either you chose to take a hike or ride a bike we can guarantee that you would enjoy wonderful panorama views, landscapes, scents and cultural heritage of Rilic mountain.
